    Jim Bishop

My Life with Plants: Confessions of a Plantaholic

Jim Bishop, plantaholic, walks us through his addiction to plants, starting with his first gateway plant memories as a child to the many plants, people, and places that led to a full-blown obsession.

Jim was fortunate to grow up in many different environments in the U.S. and always noted the differences climate had on plants. From grade school through high school, he was already into gardening and growing flowers and vegetables from seed, taking care of his parents’ yard, and eventually landscaping the home they purchased his freshman year of college. Plants played a critical role in his decision to accept an unusual job offer in San Jose, California, and relocate from his native Texas. Eventually, the desire to own a home and grow more plants would lead to his decision to relocate once again to San Diego. His home in Encinitas for 14 years became his personal test garden for many different plants, plant passions, and landscape trends. Plants also played a key role in Jim's meeting his life partner, Scott Borden. In 1998, they would purchase their current home and transform it with plants, gardens, and hardscape to create a unique and well-known San Diego garden.

Despite his life-long obsession for plants, it was only in his mid-50s that Jim would briefly become involved in horticulture as a profession. He worked as a landscape designer and was the assistant coordinator of the Garden Show at the San Diego County Fair. In 2009, he joined the board of the San Diego Horticultural Society and was elected its third president in 2011. During his tenure, Jim has written a monthly featured column, entitled My Life with Plants, for the Society’s newsletter, Let’s Talk Plants! You can read all of his past columns online at: My Life With Plants

Join members of the SDHS board, including in-coming president Frank Mitzel, for a celebration in honor of outgoing and incoming SDHS officers and board members. Festive free snacks and beverages will be served during a meet-and-greet reception starting at 5:45 p.m. in advance of the monthly meeting.

Don’t miss this opportunity to thank Jim and welcome new leaders to SDHS.

    The presentation starts at 6:45pm.

    Frank McDonugh
20 South African Plants Every Home Landscaper Should Know

The record drought drew attention to low water use landscaping in general and to South African plants. Many parts of South Africa, including the exceptionally diverse Cape Floristic Provence, host non-thirsty and usually non-invasive plants that are both visually pleasing and attention getting. Botanist Frank McDonough discusses the 20 stunning, hardy, and currently available offerings that every landscape designer, professional or amateur, should have in their plant palate.

Currently the Los Angeles County Arboretum’s Botanical Information Consultant, Frank McDonough has 35 years’ experience in horticulture. He identifies plants, pests and diseases for Arboretum staff, the County of Los Angeles, businesses and private individuals. His televised California State University Dominguez Hills class on gardening and landscaping culture in Los Angeles ran from 2004 until 2008 and garnered thousands of viewers. Frank gives popular classes in plant taxonomy and night photography, a monthly overview of what’s hot in horticulture, and gives specialized tours including the perennially sold out Fall Foliage and Valentine’s Day Love Plants tours.

    Debra Lee Baldwin
Designing with Succulents in the New San Diego Garden

We're launching Debra's new book! Debra Lee Baldwin will bring, warm from the presses, the completely revised, 10th anniversary, second edition of the book that launched global interest in succulents and made horticultural history: Designing with Succulents. As she shows gorgeous photos from her new book (many taken right here in San Diego), you'll discover practical and appealing   uses for succulents, and how to use these low-water lovelies to enhance gardens large and small. And because we're Debra's "home club" (she's a lifetime SDHS member and our 2017 Horticulturist of the Year), she'll share her vision for the future of San Diego gardens. Yes, these include succulents, but Debra will explain what works and what doesn't, plus low-water companions and design elements that you can use to create a distinctive, regionally appropriate, nature-wise, eye-catching, easy-care landscape.

Debra Lee Baldwin, helped launched the gardening world's interest in succulents in 2007 with her first book, Designing with Succulents, and with her two other books Succulent Container Gardens and Succulents Simplified. Debra's own half-acre garden has been featured in Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset, San Diego Home and Garden, and other publications.

Debra Lee will be signing her books before and after her presentation.

    The presentations starts at 6:45.

    Rick Darke
Gardens on the High Line: Elevating the Nature of Modern Landscapes

Rick Darke, author and consultant, discusses the famous High Line garden in New York City.

We’ve arrived at a watershed in design that invites the flux of living communities into the essential character of public and private gardens. This approach is beautifully represented by The High Line, a 1.45-mile-long park in New York City created on an elevated section of a no longer used New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line. Before it was restored, the High Line was an untouched, abandoned, overgrown landscape. Today it is much more than that. It’s a central plaza, a cultural center, a walkway, and a green retreat in a bustling city that is free for all to enjoy. But above all else, it is a beautiful, dynamic garden, with plantings designed by Piet Oudolf, one of the world’s most extraordinary garden designers. Rick Darke discusses why The High Line is a model of creative, conservation-based design and stewardship that supports a diversity of life, both human and other. He also illustrates how insights from the High Line are worthy of emulation in residential and community landscapes around the world.

Rick Darke heads RICK DARKE LLC, a Pennsylvania-based consulting firm focused on conservation-based landscape design and management. His projects include parks, scenic byways, transportation corridors, corporate and collegiate campuses, conservation developments, postindustrial brownfields, botanic gardens and residential landscapes. His books include The American Woodland Garden: Capturing the Spirit of the Deciduous ForestThe Encyclopedia of Grasses for Livable Landscapes, and The Living Landscape: Designing for Beauty and Biodiversity in the Home Garden co-authored with Doug Tallamy. His latest book, Gardens of the High Line: Elevating the Nature of Modern Landscapes is co-authored with Piet Oudolf.

Rick will be signing his books which will be available for purchase at the meeting.
