    Topic:Earth-Friendly Gardens/Micro-greens

Description: Are you interested in ideas on how to make your garden more Earth-Friendly and sustainable?

Please join us for a workshop, activity and garden tour at member Dawn Standke's home.  We will share ideas of many environmentally responsible ways you can enhance your garden practices. Master Gardeners Dawn Standke, Kathryn Blankinship and Valorie Shatynski will lead you through our idea list and help you certify your own garden as Earth-Friendly.You will leave with information for things you can do in your own garden - plus a container of microgreens that you will have planted yourself.Allow time to tour Dawn's newly terraced backyard filled with pollinator attracting plants, edibles, natives and other water-wise plants which work together to showcase the ideals of Earth-Friendly Gardening:

    • Select Appropriate Plants
    • Nurture the Soil
    • Manage Pests Responsibly
    • Protect Wildlife
    • Reduce Waste
    • Grow Food
    • Conserve Water
    • Conserve Energy

Speakers: Master GardenersDawn Standke, Kathryn Blankinship and Valorie Shatynksi are presenting.

Dawn's work with the Master Gardeners centers on helping people create beautiful sustainable gardens that consume fewer resources - water, pesticides, fossil fuel and labor, and that give back more - more edibles, more birds, butterflies, and other beneficials. Dawn is the chair of the Certified Earth-Friendly Gardens committee.

Kathryn is a lifelong gardener with fruiting plants as her main focus.  Using sustainable gardening practices Kathryn nurtures over 50 fruiting plants in her yard. She is skilled at propagating fruiting plants from cuttings and grafting scions onto the seedlings or rootstocks she has grown. She is a life member of the California Rare Fruit Growers and past chairperson of the North County San Diego chapter.

Valorie worked on her family’s specialty seed crop farm in Southern Oregon which was self-sustaining, including the edible garden. She worked with the UC Extension, providing resources on vermicomposting and school gardening. She was Deputy Director of Rivers & Mountains Conservancy which provided grants, requiring best practices in sustainable landscaping and water conservation.

To be held rain or shine.
