Gardening on a Slope

Cielo and Kevin Foth transformed their backyard from a hillside of weeds and iceplant to the terraced beauty it is today. Their backyard is an outdoor living space, and they spend most of the weekend daylight hours in their backyard. Taking the inside outside means making the outside comfortable to rest in between (or after) working in the garden. Their backyard is a terraced hillside garden with over 200 fruiting plants (deciduous, subtropical and  tropical  fruit trees), and a kitchen garden. The majority of the tropical fruit tree collection is mango - 30  varieties. To help sustain the fruit trees, two 1100-gallon rainwater harvesting tanks were installed in 2009.

Cielo and Kevin will show what types of wall blocks and tools they've used to tame the slopes. Everything they have used is available from Home Depot, Lowe's or other brick masonry sources, like RCP Block.  They will teach you how to custom cut a wall block that can be used to fit in a terraced wall, garden bed and/or a path.

There are many stairs, so this workshop is only for people with good mobility. Sorry, no walkers or canes permitted.
